How to remove your personal information from the internet
Ever Googled your own name and been surprised by what you find?
Your name, address, phone number, age — and more — are often floating around the web, easy for anyone to access. That includes scammers and identity thieves.
But you’re not powerless. There are ways to take back some control.
Start with Google
If you see your personal info show up in a search result:
• Click the three dots next to the URL
• Select “Remove result” and fill out the form
If approved, the link should disappear from search within a few days.
You can also turn on Google’s free “Results About You” feature. It notifies you when your contact info pops up in search and gives you a one-click option to request removal.
⚠️ Keep in mind: this doesn’t delete the actual webpage — just hides it from Google results. To truly remove your info, you’ll need to contact the site directly.
Try a data removal service
There are paid tools that claim to remove your info from dozens of sites automatically.
A Consumer Reports study found that two of the most effective ones are:
• EasyOptOuts
• Optery
They cost around $20 to $40 per year.
There are many other services like Incogni and Privacy Bee, your mileage may vary.
The DIY method is still the most reliable
The best way to clean up your digital footprint? Do it yourself.
Start by searching your name. When you find a people-search site with your data:
• Visit that site
• Look for a “privacy” or “opt out” link
• Submit a request to remove your information
A good place to get started is DeleteMe’s free directory of opt-out instructions for popular sites including:
• Spokeo
It takes effort — and yes, it can feel like a game of whack-a-mole — but the more you remove, the harder it is for bad actors to misuse your data.
Just be mindful of where you share personal info going forward… and keep pushing back.
