AT&T adds SIM swap protection - here’s how to lock down your number on all major carriers
Most major carriers now offer a way to protect your phone number from SIM swap scams—and AT&T just rolled out their version, called Wireless Account Lock.
This is important because your phone number is tied to just about everything—texts, calls, and especially two-factor codes used to log in to your bank, email, and other sensitive accounts. A SIM swap attack lets a scammer hijack your number and use it to access your accounts. Locking your number adds a strong layer of protection.
Here’s how to turn it on for AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile:
AT&T – Wireless Account Lock
You’ll need to use the myAT&T app, and it must be installed on a device that’s active on your account.
Open the myAT&T app and sign in
Tap Services (bottom tab)
Choose Mobile Security
Scroll to Wireless Account Lock
Tap Continue
Select the line you want to lock
Swipe to lock the account
Keep in mind: You’ll need to unlock it if you’re switching devices or porting out your number.
Verizon – SIM Protection & Number Lock
Log in to your account at verizon.com with Account Owner or Manager access.
To enable SIM Protection:
Go to Account > Account settings > Security settings
Under SIM Protection, click Edit
Toggle on for the line(s) you want to protect
Click Save changes and confirm if prompted
To enable Number Lock:
Scroll to Number Lock and click Edit
Toggle on
Save and confirm
SIM Protection blocks unauthorized SIM or device changes. Number Lock prevents your number from being ported out.
T-Mobile – SIM Protection & Port Out Protection
Use the T-Life app on a T-Mobile device.
To enable SIM Protection:
Tap Manage
Tap the gear icon (Settings)
Tap Security > SIM Protection
Toggle on for your account or individual lines
To enable Port Out Protection:
Tap Manage
Under My Account, tap See Plans
Tap Manage Add-ons
Choose the line
Scroll to Port Out Protection and check the box
Tap Continue, review, then Agree & Submit
Repeat for other lines if needed
Bottom line: This is one of the easiest ways to secure your digital identity. It only takes a minute, and it could save you from a major headache later.
