Check out these tools that can help you make the most of your Netflix subscription – including a way to browse videos in all of the “secret” categories, speed up movies, blur images and descriptions to avoid spoilers, see IMDB & Rotten Tomatoes ratings and even watch with friends.
It seems like every conversation these days somehow leads to Netflix. The shows we’re watching, the great documentaries we’ve found and whether the Netflix original movies are any good.
Personally, I’m trying to make the most of the $14 I spend monthly on my Netflix subscription – not because it’s a ton of money, but combine that with the $40 I spend on DIRECTV NOW and the $10 I pay for YouTube Premium and it all adds up.
I’d rather not pony up another $6 every time I want to rent a movie on iTunes.
These tools can help you avoid that Friday night thing where you spend more time debating what to watch on Netflix than actually watching.
Keep in mind, these extensions are for the Chrome web browser, so they won’t affect the way Netflix looks or acts on your TV or tablet. But, you can install and use them on the web to research and find great stuff to watch, then add the titles to your list to access on your TV so you always have something great to watch in your queue.
Better Browse for Netflix adds a new “Browse all” menu to your Netflix homepage that lets you explore all of the “secret” categories on Netflix. They aren’t really secret, but Netflix organizes movies in lots of different and highly specific ways. This extension lets you see and browse through all of those categories, which can be more useful than the suggestions we normally see.
This way you can get super targeted with your browsing, and look up everything in say, the Anime Action, Anime Comedies, or Anime Dramas category. Or go Classic Dramas, Classic TV Shows or Classic War Movies.
You can also check out categories like Films Based on a Book, Martial Arts Movies, Monster Movies, Movies for Kids Ages 2 to 4, or various other age ranges. These categories are especially helpful for finding great new stuff for the kids to watch.
While Netflix puts less and less emphasis on ratings and more on matching content to your preferences, RateFlix fills in the gap with good old-fashioned critics.
Once you install the extension, it will show you a video title’s rating across various services right on the Netflix information screen. No more searching third party sites. You can see ratings from Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB and Metacritic front and center as you browse. This can help you make more informed choices on what to watch!
The ratings are also shown on the playbar of the title you’re currently watching. You can even click on an IMDB rating to be taken straight to the full listing page for that title.
Super Netflix lets you take control of just about every aspect of watching video on Netflix, at least when you’re watching on your browser.
You change the speed of videos that you watch, going from .5 to 4 times faster. According to Super Netflix, a slower speed can help you get through a slow movie (or a long one!) faster. A fast speed can be helpful if you’re trying to absorb and learn a new language by watching films, or just like to power through shows.
You can also change the streaming video quality and blur images and episode descriptions so there are no spoilers as you browse. You can even change a setting so show intros are always skipped.
Super Netflix comes from a website named subflicks.com and has over 160,000 users on Chrome.
Netflix Party is a Chrome extension that lets you watch with friends!
Of course, both parties have to have Netflix, but the helper extension lets friends watch from two places at once at the same time. It works by syncing up video playback and adding group chat so you can talk about what’s happening on screen.
Netflix Party has over 300,000 users.
Finally, never get interrupted again on a binge session. An extension called Netflix Pause Removal lets you watch forever.
The simple app has one purpose: it helps you avoid that dreaded “Continue watching” dialog in Netflix if you’ve been streaming for a long period of time.
Once Netflix Pause Removal is installed, you’ll never see it again. Take that, all 10 seasons of Friends!
Now that you know about these tools, you should never have a problem finding something great to watch on Netflix, and watching just the way you like.
